About Kanpur Smart City

The city lies on the right bank of the Ganga river, which acts as a physical and administrative boundary. The city initially started settling along the Ganga and is gradually sprawling in all directions. City has been renowned producer and exporter of leather and textile goods, which started as the inception of industrial revolution in the country. The majority of industries came along the transport nodes of waterways and railways. Presently, the city is spread over a area of 260 sq. km. towards North, West and South directions.

Nestled on the banks of the eternal Ganga, Kanpur stands as one of North India’s major industrial centers with its own historical, religious and commercial importance. Believed to be founded by king Hindu Singh of the erstwhile state of Sachendi, Kanpur was originally known as `Kanhpur’. Historically, Jajmau on the eastern outskirts of present day Kanpur is regarded as one of the most archaic townships of Kanpur district.
